Chapter Eight: In Between

She spent August surrounded by beginnings.

Birthdays.

Engagements.

New chapters announced with cake, photographs, congratulations, and champagne glasses held high.

She was happy for them.

She really was.

There was something lovely about watching people she knew step into the next rooms of their lives.

But somewhere beneath the laughter, she couldn’t help wondering when someone would announce hers.

Not an engagement.

Not a wedding.

Not necessarily anything that could be photographed and posted.

Just some evidence that she, too, was moving.

August gave her very little of that.

From the outside, almost nothing changed.

She still forgot to fold the laundry after it dried.

The folded clothes still remained in the basket long enough to become a second wardrobe.

The dishes occasionally sat untouched until they began developing ecosystems of their own.

Meals were still something she remembered only when her body became sufficiently offended by their absence.

Work remained work.

And if someone asked whether she had made any real progress, she might have struggled to provide an impressive answer.

Perhaps she hadn’t.

Perhaps that was the problem.

But then again, August was never really happening outside of her.

It was happening inside.

She found herself talking to her friends more.

People from home.

People who had known her before the Middle East became the place she lived, worked, and somehow remained.

And there was her best friend in the other side of the world.

A familiar voice separated by distance, but somehow close enough to make another possibility feel less impossible.

They began talking about possibilities.

Then about opportunity.

Then about the idea that perhaps the future wasn’t simply another country on her list.

Perhaps it could become a door.

It was still only a possibility.

Nothing had been signed.

Nothing had been guaranteed.

But for the first time, her relocation plans felt less like a fantasy she kept alive to make the future bearable.

They felt like something that might actually be built.

And that was the strange thing about August.

Nothing happened.

And yet everything seemed to move.

She celebrated other people’s milestones while quietly examining her own life.

She stayed in a job she increasingly wanted to leave.

She imagined leaving without knowing exactly what would come after.

She maintained routines badly.

She maintained friendships better.

She laughed.

She worried.

She planned.

She procrastinated.

She existed somewhere between wanting everything to change and being exhausted by the thought of changing anything.

She was, in every possible sense, in between.

Not quite here.

Not yet there.

Not the person she used to be.

Not yet the person she kept imagining.

Perhaps that was why August felt so uneventful from the outside.

There were no dramatic departures.

No plane tickets.

No resignation letters.

No new address.

No grand transformation.

Just a woman standing at the edge of her own life, looking toward the next chapter and wondering whether she was brave enough to turn the page.

Maybe that was enough.

Maybe not every chapter exists to move the story forward.

Some chapters simply show the protagonist waiting by the stairs.

Learning the shape of the door.

Wondering what is on the other side.

Gathering enough courage to reach for the handle.

And perhaps that was August.

Not the beginning.

Not the ending.

Just the space between them.

In between.
