Chapter Seven: Between Breaths

Learning Tomorrow Again

No one noticed the moment she stopped surviving.

Not because she had suddenly started living, but because the change was too quiet to earn anyone’s attention.

The world continued exactly as it always had. Emails still arrived before breakfast. Laundry still piled into impossible mountains. Work demanded its deadlines. Bills continued introducing themselves every month with unwavering confidence.

From the outside, nothing had changed.

Inside, however, something had begun to loosen.

It started with questions.

Not the frightening kind that searched for endings, but the gentler kind that searched for beginnings.

What would peace look like?

Would another country feel different?

Could loneliness exist beside hope?

Would love ever feel less like a memory and more like a possibility?

She didn’t find answers.

Instead, she found herself speaking the questions aloud.

Somewhere between those conversations, an old dream wandered back into the room.

A small cottage tucked between trees.

Shelves bending beneath the weight of well-loved books.

Dogs running freely through the garden.

Tomatoes stubbornly refusing to grow under her inexperienced hands.

For years, she had dismissed the dream as fantasy.

This time, she looked at it differently.

Perhaps the cottage had never been the destination.

Perhaps it had always been another name for peace.

Then came a decision so small that most people would never think to call it brave.

She opened a dating app.

Not because loneliness had become unbearable.

Not because she expected someone to rescue her.

But because curiosity quietly outweighed fear.

Her hands hesitated.

Her thoughts questioned every photograph.

Every sentence.

Every word.

Was she interesting enough?

Was she too quiet?

Too ordinary?

Too much?

Too little?

The questions arrived one after another, as they always had.

But for the first time in a long while, they were followed by action instead of retreat.

She pressed “Publish.”

Nothing extraordinary happened.

The earth did not tremble.

The stars offered no applause.

Life simply continued.

Yet somewhere, beneath all the ordinary moments, another chapter had already begun.

Because hope rarely announces itself.

It arrives disguised as small decisions.

Another chapter before bed.

Another page written.

Another plan for tomorrow.

Another dream given permission to stay.

She would not remember July as the month everything changed.

She would remember it as the month she stopped believing that surviving was the only story left to tell.

The life she longed for was still waiting somewhere beyond the horizon.

For the first time in a long while…

she believed it might also be waiting for her.
